Warning: Free Valentine's Day eCards

In this age of the internet, sending electronic greeting cards has become a tradition. But many computer experts are warning consumers that using free Valentine's Day eCards services may not be as free as you think.

What's the price for using this service? They say vulnerability to more spam in you and your loved one's email inbox.

If ever you've tried sending a free eCard before, you'll notice that it is required of you to register an account, or at least, give your email - along with the email address of your recipient. After that, your friend or love one will receive the Valentine's message through their inbox and all seems well.

What you don't know is that the free eCard company now has two email addresses which they can now sell to third party companies, or themselves, to send you unsolicited mail, selling you whatever product or service they also have, over the course of time until you figured out how to unsubscribe from their mailing list.
So for this year, if you want less chances to receive more span in your inbox, try to avail your eCards from reputable websites. Paying for a few cents to a dollar is okay, if it means your loved one will not receive spam afterwards, or worse, a trojan containing malware or a virus.

Better yet, instead of sending a free Valentine eCard, why not make your own eCard by simply searching online for Valentine images, pasting them on a photo editing program such as MS Paint or Photoshop, and writing a personal love greeting.

Not as elegant or sophisticated as those you can send in other electronic card services, but it's more safe and more importantly, as sweet, romantic and as thoughtful.

Have a spam-free Valentine's Day everyon

Nevis Agriculture Minister satisfied with Agriculture Extension Officers efforts in island’s food security thrust

IA-CHARLESTOWN Nevis, February 13th 2012 - Minister of Agriculture on Nevis Hon. Robelto continued to voice satisfaction with the sustained efforts of Agriculture Extension Officials on the island which he said  had impacted positively on the food security thrust on Nevis.

Mr. Hector’s comment came while on an island wide tour of privately and Government owned farms around the island on Friday February 10, 2012. He was accompanied by Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Agriculture Dr. Kelvin Daly, Director of Agriculture in the Department of Agriculture Mr. Keithley Amory and Agriculture Extension Officers. He also gave his impressions of a Cades Bay farm owned and operated by Mr. Mansa Tyson.

“I am very much impressed particularly with the effort of the [Extension] Officers to make sure that we move one step closer to have the Department and Farmers meeting the supply for tomatoes on an annual basis.

“Last year my information is that we did six months of the year and I am hoping that we can at least do it for another two months of the year,” he said.

Mr. Amory in turn spoke to his Department’s projections for tomatoes as far as local production was concerned and the steps they had already taken to fulfil them.

“What we are hoping to do is to have basically import substitution on tomatoes. We want to have like the Minister said another two months…The climate here is very conducive to it. We have been searching for verities that would give us year round production,” he said.

The Agriculture Director also spoke to a plot of tomatoes of Cades Bay Farmer Mr. Mansa Tyson where new varieties of tomatoes were under cultivation and underscored the importance of farmers to follow the planting instructions of the Department.

“The plot that the Minister saw, we had introduced two new varieties, a new and improved Adonis and Tyranus and we are looking once again at the Heat Waves to go through the summer period and then we will come back in the cool season with those two first varieties. So we are really hoping to keep this production year round.

“What we are asking is for Farmers to work along with the Department and to plant at a certain time frame when we ask you so that they do not flood the market. We are just hoping that they work along with us so that we can meet these targets not only for the tomatoes but we are looking at a number of other crops we want to target for commodity development,” he said.

According to Mr. Amory, the new improved varieties of tomatoes gave good yields in cool temperatures, one a little more than the other, since one variety was much larger than the other. However, their taste and quality were two things the consumer liked about the new varieties.

The older Heat Wave or Heat Master variety he said was a god salad tomato and therefore, the Department was hoping to push all the selected varieties with Farmers on the island.

Meantime, Dr. Daly also gave his impressions of Tyson’s farm and praised him for his accomplishments so far in Agriculture on Nevis.

“Mansa is always one of our premium Farmers and his entrepreneurship is what we are looking for. He is now more a business man than a Farmer and we commended him to that effect.

“He does not need much prompting he is always on board with new ideas, he works well with the Extension staff which is critical, he has a superior outlet at his own location and he also sells through the Marketing Division. So he is the kind of iconic figure we are looking for, to move agriculture forward in 2012 and beyond,” he said.

SIX of St.Kitts Nevis athletes qualify for WORLD INDOOR CHAMPIONSHIPS!

TIANDRA PONTEEN became the sixth athlete to qualify when she won the 400 m in 53.10 sec on Feb. 2012 at the Texas A&M Invitational which took place at the Gilliam Indoor Track Stadium - College Station, Texas!

Tiandra’s 400m winning time of 53.10 seconds, is a new season best and a new Olympic Development Record. She won her heat convincingly (over an entire second).

The previous Olympic Development Record was set by her on the 28th January 2012 in a time of 53.45 seconds.

MARECIA PEMBERTON made her 2012 indoor debut at the Spire Division 1 Indoor Track and Field Invite in Ohio. She won her heat in 7.49 seconds and later won her final in 7.48 seconds having recovered from a poor start in the final. Marecia is currently the national record holder in this event.

SKNAA also reports that TAMEKA WILLIAMS has entered her name in the record books for the 2nd time by eclipsing Marecia Pemberton’s 11 month national record in the women’s 60m meter at the IHM Karlsruhe International Hallenleichtathletik Meeting in Karlsruhe, Germany.

Tameka finished 3rd in the 60m at the BW Bank Meeting in Karlsruhe, Germany. Her time of 7.24 IS A NEW NATIONAL INDOOR RECORD.

She finished behind Ivet Lalova of Bulgaria (7.16) and Aleen Bailey of Jamaica (7.18); both of whom recorded a lifetime best along with Tameka. It’s also important to note that Tameka is currently the National Junior Record Holder in the women’s 100m dash (11.44 seconds set in 2008).

Meanwhile, Kim Collins sped to a season’s best time of 6.61 seconds in the 60 m Indoors, winning his preliminary race at the PSD Bank Meeting in Dusseldorf, Germany. But again due to injury he fell short in the finals and placed 8th in a time of 6.91 secs.

Along with the three females named above, KIM COLLINS, ANTOINE ADAMS and BRIJESH LAWRENCE are all qualifiers for World Indoor Championships.

In their various meets, our athletes are delivering personal bests, breaking records and qualifying for more performances on the world stage.

We thank the SKNAA for bringing us these reports which are sometimes difficult to access and join with them in sending to our athletes our ‘Valentine love’ and congratulations on their successes.

St. Kitts and Nevis and Taiwan in final negotiations on an extradition treaty

BASSETERRE ST. KITTS, FEBRUARY 13TH 2012 (CUOPM) – St. Kitts and Nevis’ Attorney General, the Hon. Patrice Nisbett said negotiations which began Monday on an Extradition Treaty with the Republic of China (Taiwan) are timely and would send the right kind of message in promoting respect for justice, security and social integrity.

“Our Government has been an ardent advocate of the constitutional tenets of peace, order and good governance in our relentless pursuit to adhere to the rule of law and the principles of natural justice. We therefore embrace our international partners in an effort to combat crime in both the local and international arena,” said Mr. Nisbett, who is also Minister of Justice and Legal Affairs

In remarks prior to the start on negotiations at the Embassy of the Republic of China (Taiwan), the Attorney General said St. Kitts and Nevis embraces Taiwan as an international partners in an effort to combat crime in both the local and international arena.

“Indeed the changing and complex face of crime in this millennium has clearly demonstrated that in order to thwart the forces of evil we must work collectively to ensure the peace and safety of all our nations. Our Government has undertaken a number of other initiatives to address the incidence of crime at the national and international level,” said Attorney General Nisbett, who added that no initiative at addressing this incidence would be viable without due consideration of the impact of developments in the international community.

He said it has been observed that over the last two or three decades there has been a significant shift in crime which has triggered an international response of bolstering security.

“This has been impacted by the phenomenal concept of globalisation that drives and informs international political, economic and social policy decisions,” said Mr. Nisbett.

He said St. Kitts and Nevis is part of the global village and, as such, the porous nature of its borders as a small developing country has heightened the vulnerability to be impacted by certain styles of criminal activities and related developments in the global community.

The St. Kitts and Nevis Attorney General said that strong ties have been forged between the twin-island Federation and Taiwan and both nations have fostered mutual benefits that would continue to redound for the prosperity for all.

He said the negotiations is another encouraging sign of progress as both sides negotiate the final provisions of the Extradition Treaty which is to be implemented by the two countries.

“This Treaty represents another monumental step towards the promotion of strong ties of international cooperation,” said the Attorney General.

Taiwan’s Resident Ambassador His Excellency Miguel Tsao in brief remarks said crime fighting is now an international issue and a global threat.

“No country by itself alone can get rid of the intimidation, threat, presence and danger of crime, and that is why it is of utmost importance to work together to fight this scourge and create a suitable environment for all citizens. I am so elated about the future signing of this Extradition Treaty to help reduce the volume of crime committed in either of our countries,” said Ambassador Tsao adding that he was happy of the strides made by St. Kitts and Nevis in reducing crime in recent times.

He pointed out that the Republic of China (Taiwan) is an island country located in the Western Pacific, looming large in foreign trade.

“Without trade, we couldn’t subsist. One of the most indispensible pre-requisite to create and sustain trade is security. In this regard, we can indeed say that we need to cooperate with friendly countries to reach our goals,” said Ambassador Tsao.

He said hammering out the Treaty of Extradition will bode well for cracking down on crime, as it means an improvement in security.

“The discussions between both sides will seek to organize a task force as the first step to inking our Treaty,” he said at the start of negotiations.

The visiting delegation from the Republic of China (Taiwan) is lead by Prosecutor Mr. Ju-chang Yu in the Ministry of Justice, and the Representative of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Mr. Jen-liang Huang and Political Counsel in the Embassy of the Republic of China (Taiwan).
St. Kitts and Nevis’ delegation is led by Senior Parliamentary Counsel, Mr. Israel Mukasa, Parliamentary Counsels, Ms. Karen Hughes and Ms. Allison Isaac and Senior Assistant Secretary in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Samuel Berridge.

Supreme Court Justice Breyer robbed at machete-point during Caribbean vacation

Washington (CNN) -- Supreme Court Justice Stephen Breyer was robbed last week by an intruder armed with a machete while Breyer was vacationing on the Caribbean island of Nevis, court officials said Monday.
Breyer, his wife and two other guests were in the justice's vacation home at the time, but officials said no one was hurt in the incident.

The male assailant took $1,000 in cash and fled the scene, according to court spokeswoman Kathy Arberg. The robbery was reported to local authorities shortly after it happened last Thursday night, and local media said no arrests had been made as of Monday.

It was unclear whether the intruder knew Breyer's professional identity.
The U.S. Marshals Service provides protection for members of the high court when they are traveling, and agency spokesman Jeff Carter said Monday that the marshals service "is aware of the incident involving Justice Breyer on the Caribbean island of Nevis and is assisting the Supreme Court Police and local law enforcement authorities with the investigation as needed." He did not elaborate.

FBI spokesman Paul Bresson said, "We are assisting the local police with their investigation."
Meanwhile, police on the island were "actively searching for a known person of interest," Commissioner C.G. Walwyn of the Royal St. Christopher and Nevis Police Force said Monday. "Our American-trained crime scene investigators and the members of our Criminal Investigators (unit) are working closely with the FBI on this case," he added.

Breyer had no comment on the matter, and the court would not say if he had returned to the United States. The high court is in recess this week, but the justices have scheduled a closed-door meeting Friday to go over pending court business, and they resume public sessions next week.
Nevis is part of the West Indies chain known as the Leeward Islands, located about 350 miles southeast of Puerto Rico.
The court does not talk publicly about specific security arrangements for the justices, either when they are at home or on their frequent travels. Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg traveled to Egypt and Tunisia last month as part of an outreach program sponsored by the State Department, which provided her security in the volatile region.

Attacks on members of the federal judiciary are not new. Then-Justice David Souter was assaulted by a group of young males in 2004 while jogging alone in the evening near his Washington home. Souter suffered some minor bruises and was briefly treated then released from a local hospital.

Justice Byron White was attacked in July 1982 while giving a speech in Utah. That incident led to regular protection by U.S. marshals for members of the court when they travel.
The 73-year-old Breyer was nominated to the high court in 1994, and is known as one of the most active and engaging members of the court. His wife is Dr. Joanna Breyer, a renowned pediatric psychologist.
