Trends in Cosmetic Surgery

If you have been thinking about possibly undergoing plastic surgery, you have likely been trying to do as much research on the subject as possible. Along these lines, aboutplasticsurgery.com can be extremely helpful with regard to medical details and surgery recommendations. However, if you have not yet gotten that far in the process, and you are more interested in finding out some basic, general information about plastic surgery, you may want to look elsewhere for advice. For example, you may want to know what sorts of procedures are most common these days before you rush into a doctor’s office and sign yourself up for surgery. Fortunately, there is plenty of data and advice out there on this topic as well.

For example – as noted at www.aafprs.org (the website for the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery) – facial plastic surgeries have actually experienced a significant decline in popularity over the course of the last few years. The site notes that procedures in general have risen 45% in popularity over the last couple of years (as of January 2011), but that non-surgical procedures increased by 16%. This data seems to indicate that the current trend is not necessarily against cosmetic procedures, but that more people may be looking for alternative methods to surgery. So, what could the reasons for such a trend be?

The first thing that comes to mind is that people simply prefer not to be operated on if there is a choice in the matter. That is, given the choice between an invasive surgical procedure and a simple injection or facial treatment, most people will probably choose the latter, particularly if it is proven to be effective. As non-surgical facial procedures advance, and doctors become more confident in the effectiveness of such methods, people will see less and less reason to undergo surgery to affect bodily changes.

The other main factor in this trend is that the prices of actual surgical procedures have risen, for the most part, over the course of the last few years. Due to generally increased demand for plastic surgery, as well as in some cases increasingly expensive procedures, patients are having to pay more for the results that they want. Meanwhile, alternative treatments such as collagen and botox injections, and things of that nature, cost significantly less, and are thus more and more appealing. So, while the decision is of course up to the individual with regard to personal preference and budget, it may be worth noting that the current trends in facial cosmetics lean against surgery and toward alternative methods.
